Triethyl orthoformate is a multiple carboxylic acid ester. It represents a hypothetical triple ester of the virtually non-existent orthoformic acid that is actually obtained from the reaction of other compounds such as chloroform or hydrogen cyanide. The molecules of the substance are built around a central carbon atom. In addition to a connected hydrogen atom, this has bonds to three oxygen atoms, which are each connected to an ethyl group and form an ethoxy group with it.
Triethyl orthoformate is in liquid form under normal conditions. The compound is colorless in appearance and has a pleasant, aromatic odor. The substance only reaches its boiling point when heated to 146 °C and withstands severe cooling before congealing to a solid at temperatures below -76 °C. Liquid triethyl orthoformate is lighter than water.
The substance is hygroscopic and attracts moisture, but is only slightly soluble in water. Instead, the compound gradually decomposes on contact with water. In contrast, triethyl orthoformate is readily soluble in many organic solvents such as diethyl ether and ethanol.

Storage
Store in a sealed package in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. Maintain the storage conditions as follows: Temperature ≤30℃, relative humidity ≤75%. Keep away from ignition sources, heat, strong acids, strong bases and oxidants. Strictly prohibit mixed storage with food and feed. The shelf life is 6 months.
Transportation
Transport as hazardous goods. Avoid exposure to sunlight, rain and high temperatures. Handle with care during loading and unloading to prevent package damage. The transport vehicle must be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment.
Leakage
Isolate the leakage area and wear protective equipment. Cover and collect solid leakage with dry sand; adsorb liquid leakage with vermiculite. Prevent dust from spreading. Wastewater shall be treated by professional institutions.
Exposure
Skin Contact: Rinse the affected area thoroughly with soapy water for 15 minutes.
Eye Contact: Rinse eyes with flowing clean water for 15 minutes and then seek medical attention immediately.
Inhalation: Move the victim to fresh air. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult.
Ingestion: Rinse the mouth immediately, drink a sufficient amount of warm water to induce vomiting, and seek medical treatment promptly.
Fire
Extinguish the fire with dry powder, carbon dioxide or foam. Do not directly spray water on molten substances. Firefighters must wear full-body fire suits and gas masks.
