Appearance and Properties
It is a colorless and transparent liquid with a pungent odor. Slightly soluble in water, it is miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol and diethyl ether.
Main Uses and Synthetic Applications
Intermediate for Pharmaceuticals and Fine Chemicals
It is used in the synthesis of antimalarial drugs (e.g., chloroquine and piperaquine), acaricides (e.g., amitraz), and herbicides (e.g., pyrazosulfuron-ethyl). It also finds application in photosensitive materials and methine/cyanine dyes.
Reagent for Organic Synthesis
Serves as an alkylating and formylating reagent, typically used under acid, base, or Lewis acid catalysis.
Applied in the protection of aldehydes/ketones by forming acetals/ketals.
Reacts with silyl enol ethers/enolates to construct structures such as β-acetal ketones.
